Jabirs Rook
Jabirs Rook
The new server hails as Jabirs_Rook and is currently planned as a dual-Pentium
III with 256Mbytes of memory for starters and running Redhat 8.0. With more knowledge gained on Linux,
I need to see just what a Linux server can do. Still haven't addressed Winbindd, so this will put a
bit of humor on this project for now.
Redhat 7.3 will start the system. Rehat 8.0 will take over at some point. Redhat, and most if not every
other Linux for that matter, can do a server's job right out of the box.
Checklist Status:
- The old case from Merlins_Rook Phase I will be the temporary casing
- Two Pentium III 733 SL3VM's on station
- 40 GB Hard drive
- Redhat 7.3 will start the system.
- All other needed components, including LAN and Sound are on station
- We are ready to build!
Take a look at Stin_Net Network
STATUS: STANDING BY
What is needed now a a few days off so I may "play" with everything.
Jabirs Rook - 28 FEB 2003
I have begun work on testing the components. I see where I missed my research and that is
this mainboard needs a SSI ATX power supply (24 pins). However, I am not surprised and that issue
is being rectified. I shall have the power supply within a few days.
Another issue being addressed are the hard drives. If this system is intended to be built as a
Linux file server, then I could substantially improve the performance by multiple-fold if I take
advantage of the onboard 68-pin DAUL UW SCSI. Two UW-SCSI 10,000rpm 36GB hard drives would cost a
bit more than and a single 80GB EIDE hard drive. However, if I use a IDE drive to "light off" the
system, the two SCSI's, operating in a Raid 1 fashion and across two controllers, could produce
some nice results that would make even the gamers happy.
Gamers will choke to tears when they realized, that as a server, the graphics card is not a hot
spot and the Trident 4MB PCI (yes, that's PCI) will more than suffice. For the record, and so that
I do not have to reopen the machine, that's a ProVidia9865 video chipset. Remeber that is it very
important to know what you are putting on your system, prir to loading Linux.
This is not the actual board but it show you what the board looks like. I will soon be uploading
the pictures of the actual motherboard soon and it is BIG. Bigger than Merlin's Tyan Tiger 133.
