Sassy and Casey!!

Sassy - June 12, 2000

One thing I have learned from Sassy; if you don't pay attention to life, life tends to catch up with you. I did not put two and two together. My youngest was soon to have a birthday on July 1,st. I had asked what he wanted for his birthday to which he pointed outside and said that he wanted the kitty. I had no clue what he was talking about.

I work nights in long 10 days shifts and a 4 day "weekend". However, I am also in the reserves, so my work schedule tends to run together. That pretty much shot the month for me as I had rescheduled the weekend of the 10th as drill dates. This pretty much ran my last work string into a 4 week string. Seemed every morning there was this siamese cat hanging around the house. I did not think anything of it and continued to go to my go to drills, and then on to work. She was not always around at night when I went to work, but she was always present in the morning. She was very friendly and on mornings she was present, she would not hesitate to approach me and be petted.

On Sunday afternoon, when I came back, she was on our porch being fed by my wife, Annette, and basking in the attention my kids where giving her. I had asked whose cat this was to which the replies were "we don't know...she's just been showing up". She had no tags.

"Can we keep it!", said my eldest son, Darwin, who had befriended her. He is the reason she stuck around the house and even to this day, Darwin seems to be HER favorite.

I guess the wife was trying to get me to reconsider. Annette said "You know, we have never had a dog or a cat in the house". We had talked about getting a dog, but never got to the pound. So we had no pets around the house. This did not go unnoticed by someone.

"Ok, I'll think about it...."
